Now I'm trying to branch out some. There are TONS of recipes to choose from on the Friendship Bread Kitchen, and I want to try some more of them out.
My newest experiment is Amish Friendship Bread Waffles.
Ingredients
- 1 cup flour
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- ½ cup oil
- 2 cups Amish Friendship Bread starter
- ½ cup milk plus ¼ cup if needed
- 1 egg
Instructions:
Preheat waffle iron.
Combine flour, salt, baking powder and baking soda in a large mixing bowl.
In a smaller bowl, combine oil, Amish Friendship Bread starter, milk, and egg.
Add ingredients of smaller bowl to the ingredients of larger bowl and mix on medium speed.
Spray waffle iron with non-stick cooking spray and pour batter onto hot waffle iron. Cook until golden brown.
So, several days before making the waffles, I took a cup of Friendship Bread Starter out of the freezer.
I put it in a big mason jar. Then, I fed it with 1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar, 1 cup milk.
I let it sit about 5 days covered with cellophane wrap. I did stir it up about once a day.
The night before needing the waffles, I poured out the starter into a bowl, and stirred in 1.5 cups flour, 1.5 cups sugar, 1.5 cups milk. I let that sit for an hour or two.
I pulled my 2 cups of starter from this bowl, and then mixed my waffle recipe up.
I let that mixture sit overnight in the refrigerator.
The next morning, I started up the waffle maker. I added just a bit of milk to thin out the batter some.
Then I made waffles on the waffle maker. My wife also made some for herself.
The waffles were delicious. Best waffles I've had in awhile. I'm not sure they are so much better to make the extra effort of building up the starter worth it, but I will be making more with the starter I have left over.
So ... I have about 3 cups of starter left over in my mason jar. As I write this post, I am planning on my next Friendship Bread Recipe.
Stay tuned on Sheppy's Blog: Friendship Bread to find out what my next recipe will be.
