Paint Mines: Mini - Bad Lands

So, this past Memorial Day Weekend, my wife (aka the SheppyBrew Beer Model) and I had a weekend away.

On the way down to where we were staying for the weekend, she wanted to check out the Paint Mines Interpretive Park, which I had actually never heard of.

"The Paint Mines Interpretive Park is one of El Paso County’s most unique open spaces. The Paint Mines are named for their colorful clays that were collected by American Indians to make paint. Brightly colored bands, caused by oxidized iron compounds, are found in varying amounts throughout the many different layers of clay."

This park's rock formation remind me quite a lot of the South Dakota Bad Lands, which we visited with the kids back in 2013 and then again in 2015.

Honestly, while driving out there, it didn't look like there was anything more interesting than the windmill farms.

We were thinking the Paint Mines Interpretive Park website must be highly embellished.

But, we parked, headed out on the trails towards the "formations", and as we got closer and closer, it became apparently that the "Paint Mines" were really a smaller version of the South Dakota Bad Lands.

I don't think my photos quite do the rock formations justice. But ... here are the photos we took.

We spent a total of a couple hours hiking in and around the rocks.

Parts of the hike were very uninteresting, but we spent most of our time in the cool parts of the park.

It was fun, and I'm glad we were able to check out this park.

It was a great start to our Memorial Day Weekend.

Stay tuned on this blog, and I may share more photos from our weekend adventures.
