2024 Melting Stream Spring Saison (Batch 354)

Colorado Spring Time means we get snow, then it gets warm out and melts the snow.

It snows again.

It melts again.

Repeats again and again and again. This cycle is one of the reasons I love living here.

Mountain streams are full and fast rushing this time of year thanks to all the melting snow.

It being Spring also means it is time to brew my Spring time Seasonal Saison.

Sunday, I brewed ...

As I often do for my Seasonal Saisons, I got the mash started the night before for an overnight mash.

Then, I got up early on Sunday with the mash done, and only needing to get the wort boiled and the beer into the fermenter.

I love my Anvil Foundry, but the one thing I wish that was different is that it takes a long time for water to heat.

It took over an hour to get from the mash temperature to boiling.

If I wanted to spend the money, I could add a 240 volt circuit so that the Foundry would have more power and therefore heat significantly faster, but I'm cheap enough that I would rather sacrifice heating speed for not spending extra money.

Plus, running at 120 means I can set up multiple places. Sometimes I brew in the garage. Sometimes I brew on the patio.

When I travel brew, I have more flexibility too.

So, I live with the slowness of the 120 Volt system.

Anyway, everything went well on brew day. The pre-boil gravity and volume were right on-plan. The boil went as designed.

I ended up with an OG of 1.050, which is close to the 1.049 OG of the recipe design.

I got the yeast pitched and the fermenter into the basement in less than 3 hours from the time I woke up.

There were signs of fermentation by mid-afternoon. The fermentation was rocking by the next day.

I should be drinking by early May.

I also got a pretty good bike ride in and BBQ'd later in the day. More on the BBQ later.
