Rocktoberfest Lager 2018

The Colorado Rockies are in the hunt for the playoffs this year.

As I type ... they are 1.5 games out of the 2nd wildcard spot, but only a game out of first in the NL West. They have plenty of games left with Arizona, so they basically have their playoff destiny in their own hands.

But ... they are the Rockies ... so they are likely to need all the help they can get.

You may not know this, but the Colorado Rockies have never won a division title.

And so ... I figured it was time for me to do my part and help by brewing some

A couple of weekends ago, I did just that.

I got started a little late, but the sun still was not quite up as I mashed in the grains.

The mash went well. I had a little mis-hap draining the mash tun into my kettles. I walked away just a little too long and overfilled my kettle (aka spilled some wort).

I had to bring up the pre-boil gravity with some DME to get back on track.

The boil went without incident.

I got the wort into the fermentor. And chilled it down to lager pitching temperature with ice.

Later in the afternoon, I grilled / smoked chicken thighs. Of course, I had SheppyBrew Beer while I did that.

As you may remember from other lager posts, I generally do faster lager fermentation than most brewers. I keep the beer cold for the first few days and let it come up to ale temperature by day 4 or 5 of fermentation.

It works well for me, and for what it is worth, one of my homebrew awards was on a Maibock , so at least a couple of BJCP judges think this technique yields good lagers.

Anyway, the Rockerfest Lager is already kegged and chilling in the beer fridge. I will most likely wait until the baseball playoffs get here to drink it.

Or maybe I'll start drinking it when the Rockies are fighting to get into the playoffs.

Either way ... you're welcome Rockies Fans!
