I've even had "new" snowshoes since March of 2021 after my original pair fell apart. I've only put these new ones on once in snow and ended up taking them off almost immediately because it didn't seem like there was enough snow to make the snowshoes worth wearing.
This past week, we got a big snow storm on Friday.
This prompted my wife (aka the SheppyBrew Beer Model) to say she wanted to go snowshoeing Saturday.
Not knowing how long we'd be out, I decided to prepare some Pulled Pork Green Chili in the Crock Pot.
And then ... she and I packed up Saturday morning and headed to Golden Gate Canyon Park to snowshoe.
We stopped at basically the first trail head after entering the park, "Horseshoe Trail".
The trail is rated "Moderate", but I'd call it a pretty easy hiking trail, made a little more challenging with the snow.
The wife had some issues with her 25-plus-year-old-snowshoes and it looks like she will need a new pair, but she was at least able to finish.
The day was fairly warm. The snow was about perfect at the beginning of the hike, but by the end melting made it not quite as good.
We made it up to a nice meadow for lunch.
The blue sky with the white snow and mountains made for a beautiful hike.
After doing a loop around the meadow, we headed back down the trail we came up.
We saw quite a few remote campgrounds that I might like to backpack to sometime, but wasn't really able to see what they were like with the snow cover.
According to Strava, we covered a total of 4.4 miles and climbed 966 feet.
It took us almost 4 hours.
All-in-all a great hike getting back into snowshoeing.
It looks like we will need to get the Beer Model new snowshoes. Hopefully it won't take us another 4 years to get out there again.
Stay tuned on Sheppy's Blog: Snowshoeing, and you'll probably find out shortly after we do.
The Green Chili turned out great after cooking 8 hours or so in the crock-pot.
Really yummy. Great weekend day.
