It is rare that I have more than one saison on tap at the same time. I usually finish drinking the previous season's saison before brewing the next one.
However, this year I decided to add a 5th Season.
At the beginning of April, my 2019 Melting Stream Spring Saison was ready to drink.
I still had a little of my Arctic Vortex Winter Saison left, and I had plenty of the 5th Season Blood Orange Saison too.
3 Saisons at once!
Arctic Vortex Winter Saison |
April 5th was a Friday after a long week. I treated myself all 3 of the saisons that evening. A nice reward for surviving another work week without murdering a co-worker.
The Arctic Vortex, of course, is a black saison. The black malts with the French Saison yeast and the nobel hops make for a very unique and delicious beer. I love it.

5th Season Blood Orange Saison |
The 5th Season was an experiment with blood orange added. To be honest, it was not quite what I was looking for. It was a solid saison ... better than lots of commercial saisons. People told me they really liked it. I just didn't think the blood orange was pronounced enough.
I've decided that I need to brew it again, modifying the ingredients and process slightly.

Melting Stream Spring Saison |
The Melting Stream, by contrast turned out fantastic ... better than I ever remember it. This is the best beer I've made in quite awhile (and that is saying quite a bit).
Interestingly, I had to modify the recipe slightly when my Local Brew Shop didn't have Hallertau and Tettnang. The increased Lemon Drop hops with the Saaz really work well together. I stumbled upon an improvement.
So, it was fun having 3 homebrewed saisons at once. Shortly after, the Arctic Vortex keg blew, so now I don't have that one.
However, Summer being right around the corner, and since I am planning on brewing the 5th Season Blood Orange Saison again real soon, there is a pretty good chance I'll have 3 sasions on tap early in the summer.
We'll see. Stay tuned!
