It is winter. Time to brew a Winter Saison.
Arctic Vortex Winter Saison
Yes, here at SheppyBrew Brewery, we brew at least 4 saisons every year.
Winter Spring Summer Autumn.
I call them my Seasonal Saison series of beers.
The Arctic Vortex Winter Saison happens to be a black saison, because winter is generally dark ... and it would be boring to make all my saisons look the same.
This past weekend, I brewed this year's Arctic Vortex Winter Saison.
Got the ingredients on Friday. Made a yeast starter on Saturday. Brewed on Sunday.
My brew day started a little later than usual, and I actually let the mash run longer than usual. My friend Du was some over in the late morning and I didn't want to be completely done by the time he got there.
It took me a little effort to get to the right mash temperature, but I wasn't in a hurry, so that's ok.
At some point in the morning, I started smoking a chuck roast on the Weber kettle.
The preboil volume was a little low. The gravity was a bit low as well, which confused me until I realized that I forgot to add the cane sugar.
Turns out that we were out of white sugar, so I had to substitute some brown sugar in as well. Even so, I ended up a bit low.
But that's ok. Lower alcohol beers are better for me.
The boil went great. Du showed up and distracted me with his Bourbon Barrel Aged Stout and a new drone that he got for Christmas.
But, everything turned out fine. My OG was a little low, but I again, I'm fine with a lower alcohol beer.
The chuck roast also turned out fantastic.
