Finding Beer Balance

Here it is ... time for another month's "The Session" (aka Beer Blogging Friday).

This month's topic comes from Bryan at This Is Why I’m Drunk. Bryan wants to know about "Finding Beer Balance".

He says:
"It’s a discussion I hope will offer a variety of responses as people consider their interests outside of finding the perfect pint."
Basically, I think he wants to know what us beer geeks do when we are not beer-geeking.

Well, of course I am married with 2 young growing boys. Between getting them to school and other activities and just playing / hiking / or biking with them takes up quite a bit of time. If you read this blog you'll see articles about my family from time to time.

I love camping. Living in Colorado, we are blessed with beautiful mountainous wilderness in which to go camping. Both my kids started camping as infants. Rocky Mountain National Park is a place we have gone to just about every year since we moved to Colorado. We have camped at the Great Sand Dunes National Park a few times. If you look through the wilderness label on this blog, you see other places we have hiked and camped.

Last summer, we even bought the kids backpacks and went on a couple of weekend backpacking trips. (see First Family Backpacking Trip and Father and Son Backpacking trip Part 1 and Father and Son Backpacking trip Part 2). This is awesome as far as I am concerned. I really love hiking into the wilderness to camp. I am a bit relieved that my kids like it too.

If you've been following the blog for awhile, you may know about my SheppyQuest backpacking trips. A SheppyQuest is where I have gone off backpacking all by myself. I have not done it in awhile, but the fact that I do it sometimes is probably an indication about how much I love to hike and camp.

I also enjoy bike riding with and without the family. I use my bike both for transportation (although probably not as much as I should) and for recreation. I especially enjoy mountain biking, as everyone should in Colorado.

Of course, if you know me at all, you know that I am a big Chicago Blackhawks fan. During the hockey season, I spend way too much time in front of the T.V. watching hockey. In fact, I have said many times that I probably would not pay for T.V. if not for the fact that I need to watch hockey.

I am sure there are other things I could go into, but for the most part that is how I like to spend my time when not beer-geeking. And to be honest, beer-geeking is not mutually exclusive with any of these activities. I've never actually done anything beer-related while mountain biking (other than using photos on beer labels), but I certainly would not completely rule it out in the future.

If you are interested what other beer-blogging-geeks do while not beer-geeking ... go check out the comment section on Bryan's blog post: I’m Having a Party and You’re Invited: “The Session” for April 2013.

  1. Thanks for sharing this! Some great pictures.

So cool your boys are able to go trekking with you, too.

    Cheers!

  2. Thanks, Bryan. When I first saw your topic I wondered if I would be able to come up with anything. I keep telling myself (and other people keep reminding me) how obsessed I am with beer. But upon reflection, I found beer is actually a small part of my life.
