Well ... because of that, I decided to brew on the 4th of July this year.
This is already my 14th batch of beer this year, and my 339th batch ever.
If I'm counting correctly, this would be my 218th unique recipe.
You'll remember I had decided to brew a "Bière de Garde" next on Roll-a-Style 13 ... Bière de Garde.
Of course, Bière de Garde isn't a style of beer I see a bunch in breweries or liquor stores, so I probably won't get a chance to compare my batch to a commercial example ... but that's ok ...
Sort of the opposite of 2022 Hail Storm Summer Saison (batch 313) ... I prepared the water and got a mash started the night before. But, I didn't do a starter.
When I got up in the morning, I actually started up the recirculation pump to start heating the mash. I collected a couple of cups of wort and diluted it to about 1.035 for a little "vitality starter".
My pre-boil gravity was right on, and my volume was a little high.
The boil went fine. This beer only had a 40 minute boil.
Chilling went well, too. I got the wort down in the 70's with my hose. Then, switched to ice water with pond pump.
I got the wort down to about 55 degrees.
I pumped into my Anvil fermenter and set up the cooling coils to keep the beer below 60 for the first day.
The airlock was bubbling hard the next day, at which point I set the cooling controller to 60.
I fermented cold (60 to 62) for a couple of days and then turned off the temperature control.
Right now, the fermentation seems about done, but I'll probably wait to keg until this coming weekend.
I'm looking forward to drinking this beer. Ideally, I'll find a local commercial examples of Bière de Garde to compare this beer to.
As always keep watching the regular SheppyBrew Channels to see what is happening with my BBQ, Beer, Biking: SheppyBrew's Facebook Page; Sheppy's Twitter Feed; SheppyBrew's Instagram Page; and SheppyBrew's Website.Of course, don't forget to visit this blog often as well!
