2023 Update on the 2021 BJCP Goal

If you follow this blog, you know I've renewed my old BJCP Goal.

Through a series of blog posts, I've discovered / acknowledged that I had not brewed whole categories in the 2021 Style Guidelines (see BJCP 2021 Style Guidelines, I lied, and 2021 BCJP Styles to Brew).

At some point, I decided to not only try to get every category covered, but work through all the styles (at least the ones that I'm interested in drinking)

I even came up with a "Roll-a-Style" concept to give me help deciding which style to brew.

After X-Mas Ale 2023 (Batch 347), I've now brewed at least one style in every BJCP Category. And ... I'm not planning on adding any more new styles before the end of the year.

In 2023, I've added ...

1. STANDARD AMERICAN BEER

1A. American Light Lager (Jethro Bud Nelson Merican Lite Lager)

1B. American Lager (Mr. Awesome Merican Lager)

1C. Cream Ale (Gringo Cerveza Popcorn Ale)

1D. American Wheat Beer (Summer Lovin' American Wheat)

2.INTERNATIONAL LAGER

2A. International Pale Lager (Sin Lima Mexican Lager)

2B. International Amber Lager (Ulterior Motive Amber Lager)

2C. International Dark Lager (No Drums Jack Black Lager)

3. CZECH LAGER

3A. Czech Pale Lager
I have not brewed anything that I've specifically tried to fit in this category. I wouldn't be surprised if some of my "International Pale Lager" could fit here, but I want to make a recipe specifically designed to fit here. (Roll-a-Style 1)

3B. Czech Premium Pale Lager (Ello Poppet Czech Pilsner)

3C. Czech Amber Lager
I have not brewed this style, but I would like to. (Roll-a-Style 2)

3D. Czech Dark Lager (Scallywag Czech Dark Lager)

4. PALE MALTY EUROPEAN LAGER

4A. Munich Helles (Snowball's Chance (in) Helles)

4C. Helles Bock (Helles in a Hand Bock-sket)

5D. German Pils (Schreck Gartenzwerg Pilsner)

6. AMBER MALTY EUROPEAN LAGER

6A. Märzen (Rocktoberfest Lager)

6B. Rauchbier
I'm tempted to give myself credit for X-Mas Ale 2013, which was a smoked beer. However it really isn't to style. I'm honestly not overly excited about brewing this style. Maybe someday, but not soon. (Roll-a-Style "Bench")

6C. Dunkles Bock (Mardi Bock)

7. AMBER BITTER EUROPEAN BEER

7A. Vienna Lager (Colorado Vienna Lager)

7B. Altbier (Sasquatch Hunter German Altbier)

8. DARK EUROPEAN LAGER

8A. Munich Dunkel (Cubs Win! Munich Dunkel)

8B. Schwarzbier (Khazad-dûm Black Lager)

9. STRONG EUROPEAN BEER

9A. Doppelbock (Brother Bear Dopplebock)

9B. Eisbock
I have not brewed one, and if I'm honest I don't really have the desire to concentrate a beer by freezing and removing the ice. (Roll-a-Style "Bench")

9C. Baltic Porter
This is a beer that I'm interested in brewing some day. (Roll-a-Style 4)

10. GERMAN WHEAT BEER

10A. Weissbier
Surprisingly, I have not brewed an official (German) Weissbier. I feel like this is one I'll have to do at least once. (Roll-a-Style "Bench")

10B. Dunkles Weissbier (Weizened Doonkle)

10C. Weizenbock
Another one I'll have to put on the to-brew list. (Roll-a-Style 5)

12A. British Golden Ale  (Tortuga Golden Ale)

12B. Australian Sparkling Ale (Colorado Pelican Australian Sparkling Ale)

12C. English IPA
I really thought I had brewed an English IPA, but I'm not finding one. I suppose I'll have to brew one next year. (Roll-a-Style 6)

13. BROWN BRITISH BEER

13A. Dark Mild (Sloth Man English Mild)

13C. English Porter (Jolly Morlock Brown Porter)

15B. Irish Stout (Cinco de Bealtaine Irish Stout)

15C. Irish Extra Stout
Another style I've never brewed. Another one I'll have to rectify. (Roll-a-Style 12)

16. DARK BRITISH BEER

I brewed Gnaughty Gnome English Coffee Stout, which has the words "English" and "Stout" right in the name, but it doesn't really fit in any of these styles. I guess I'll have to pick one of these styles soonish.

16A. Sweet Stout
Stouticus American Stout is probably the closest to this style, but I'm using that in the American Stout section. (Roll-a-Style 14)

16B. Oatmeal Stout   (Grumkins and Snarks Oatmeal Stout)

16C. Tropical Stout
Someday (Roll-a-Style 15)

16D. Foreign Extra Stout
Someday (Roll-a-Style 17)

17. STRONG BRITISH ALE

17B. Old Ale (various X-Mas Ales

17C. Wee Heavy
Probably the most accessible style in this group, and probably the one I'll brew first. (Roll-a-Style 19)

17D. English Barley Wine
I honestly thought I had brewed an English Barley Wine. But, it doesn't look like I have. (Roll-a-Style "Bench")

18. PALE AMERICAN ALE

18A. Blonde Ale (Laser Salt Sandy Blonde Ale)

19C. American Brown Ale (Imaginary Dragon Brown Ale)

Another style that I'm surprised to not find a recipe that I've brewed. (Roll-a-Style 20)

20B. American Stout (Stouticus American Stout)

20C. Imperial Stout (Tweedle Beetle Imperial Stout)

25. STRONG BELGIAN ALE

25A. Belgian Blond Ale
I don't think I've brewed a Belgium Blond. (Roll-a-Style "Bench")

29. Fruit Beer

Thanks to my wife, I have actually brewed several Fruited what beers such as:

  • X-Mas Ale 2023 was brewed this year with American Oak Medium Plus Infusion Spirals.

This is sort of a catch-all category for "everything else". I've done lots of experiments, but most of them probably fit in other styles. I do think I've brewed a couple that satisfy this category:
